Citing your sources gives credit to the people who worked hard to create the information you're using. It's not only the ethical and responsible thing to do, it's required! If you don't cite your sources, that's plagiarism. 

This flow chart is a good guide to when and how to cite sources.

Here's a great overview of MLA format. Use use MLA for your English and Social Studies assignments.

And here's an overview of APA format. You use APA format for Science classes.

Both MLA and APA require you to use a "hanging indent" for each item on your works cited page. See below for how to do that!

In a Word Document

  • Highlight the text 
  • Right Click
  • Select "Paragraph Options"
  • Under "Indentations" go to the "Special" dropdown box and select "Hanging"
