Daily "summary"

  • 6/11

    Last day

Students should have written a letter to next year's students and completed the A-Z list of things learned in English this year.  If you handed it in and did not put your name on it, you have a zero for the grade.  Several of you did not put your name...  If you were not here, you have an AB0.

    Have a wonderful summer.

    ENGLISH 9 - HACKERT/KRIVAK
  • 6/6-6/8

Final exam days!  You should have completed part I and II by Thursday (early), then started the essay, and, finally, finished the essay on Friday.

We are doing some things for next year, so please come to class with a pen on the last day of school.

    ENGLISH 9 - HACKERT/KRIVAK
  • 6/4/18

We finished the play today (mostly summarized it).  Students must complete the Acts IV and V quiz for HW.  They may use notes and the No Fear Shakespeare website.  If you were not here, please email me so I can send you the quiz.

Please bring pens/pencils for the rest of the year.  Please come prepared.

  • 6/1/18

I handed out the text analysis outline.  I asked students to read this over for HW and come in with questions on Monday.  This is the outline they'll need to follow for the final exam essay.  I also handed out an Act III study guide.  I told students that if they wanted to replace a low "R&J" quiz grade, to complete these 32 questions on a separate sheet of paper in PEN (typed is fine too).  I hope students take advantage of that opportunity.

There was no quiz today on last night's reading, but students should expect one on Monday at some point.

Students took roles for Act IV scene i.  This is a very important scene because we find out some plans to deal with Juliet's wedding to Paris.  Then, I summed up act IV scene ii (Capulet changed the date for the wedding...why is this a problem?  Students do not have to read anything other than anything they HAVE NOT read up to this point.

We gave students a quiz on Act III scene i.  If you were absent, MAKE ARRANGEMENTS TO TAKE THIS QUIZ DURING A FREE ON JUNE 1ST.  EMAIL MS. KRIVAK WHEN YOU'LL TAKE THE QUIZ.

We listened to Act III scene ii and students must finish reading the rest of Act III for HW.

The final exam is June 6, 7, 8.  Vocab review has been handed out and if you lost it, it's located in the vocab folder.  This is the only part you can study for.

  • 5/30/18

Students took the reading quiz for last night's reading (Act II scenes iii-vi).  After the quiz, we began reading Act III.  We got through where Mercutio was stabbed by Tybalt and what Mercutio says about this stabbing.  Students must finish reading the rest of Act III scene i.  http://nfs.sparknotes.com/romeojuliet/  If you were absent, please make arrangements to take today's quiz and also remember to read what you missed in class.

We mentioned that if anyone wants to revise the A Raisin in the Sun essay, they must do so in our presence (on their free period or after-school).  It must be done by next Friday, June 8th.

After some thought, we have decided that all of the "quizzes" students have been getting when they are assigned a reading will be averaged as a TEST GRADE.  We can not stress the importance of completing homework.

Today we read part of Act I scene iii and students got notes for Friar Lawrence's speech (if you were absent, they'll be attached later today).  Students must continue reading and taking notes for Act II scenes iii, iv, v, vi (the rest of the Act).

This weekend's HW is to read Act I scene v, Act II prologue, as well as Act II scenes i and ii.  Students should remember to take notes as we allow them to be used on the quizzes.  Be prepared to ask questions before the quiz.  Again, students are to use the No Fear Shakespeare website and read both the original text and modern text!  Website link is in the R&J folder.

Today, students took the quiz on Act I scenes ii and iii.  We then read Act I scene iv and discussed what Romeo felt during certain lines (please see those attached).  If you were not here, you need to email Ms. Krivak before TUESDAY to tell her when you'll be making up the quiz (ON TUESDAY).

Students should have read Act I.i last night.  Today, there was a quiz.  It was very clear some did not read and there will be more HW like this.  We hope everyone will do what is needed.

We also went over the Prince's speech (lines 77-99 in the book).  Please see the attached "translation" (which goes by line numbers) if you weren't here or missed notes as we discussed.

We also asked students to identify the 13 paradoxes in Romeo's lines 174-194.  There were 13.  Attached are those paradoxes.

Students must read Act I scene ii and scene iii for tomorrow's class.  Take notes.  No Fear Shakespeare link is in the R&J folder.

Students took the vocab 12 quiz.  If you were absent, please email Ms. Krivak to say when you'll be taking the quiz (IT SHOULD BE TOMORROW).

We read a few lines from Act I scene i and discussed.

Students then were introduced to the No Fear Shakespeare website.  There will be HW over the next several nights and this is the site to use:  http://nfs.sparknotes.com/romeojuliet/

Tonight's HW is to finish reading Act I scene i and take notes.  Be prepared for some sort of quiz.

Students heard the first 14 lines of the play.  They received a copy of some vocabulary and the lines for this section.  We asked students to interpret the 14 lines with a partner and then we went over them.  If you were absent, please read the lines on your own and interpret as best as you can.  Please only use a dictionary for words you are unfamiliar with.

Please study for the vocab 12 quiz!

First of all, welcome back to everyone.  We hope that everyone is doing okay and if there's anything we can do to ease any hardships, please let us know.

Today, we spoke about a few things:

    1.  Vocab quiz is now on 5/23.

    2.  Final exam is 6/6-6/8

    3.  If anyone is interested in taking the Honors placement test, you should have spoken to me after class.  The deadline for permission slips is Wednesday.  Test is Thursday after school.

    4.  We went over Shakespearan sonnet notes.  If you were not here, they're attached.

Students were assigned a number from the insults/salutations sheet.  They worked with a partner to come up with a "scene" where they'd say their assigned line with a gesture.  We wanted kids to get used to the language that they'll be seeing in the play.  We handed out sonnet 130.  Students did not need to do anything other than write the line numbers on the left side of the paper.  Students should have put this in their lit notes section and be ready to work with it tomorrow.

Please remember to study for the vocab 12 quiz on 5/18.

We quickly finished the prior knowledge sheet.

The students had to share their reasons for ranking social offenses wherever they did.  Some students shared their predictions.  We also discussed True/False side.

Voc 12 quiz is on Friday, 5/18.  The packet is attached and in the vocab section.  There is no HW other than to create flashcards/quizlet and study!

Students took the vocab 11 quiz today.  We then asked that students rank the "social offenses" if they did not get to it yesterday.  This social offense sheet is attached.  This will be used for the HW this weekend (which is explained later).  We also told students to complete the back of the social offense sheet and be prepared to discuss reasons for the way they feel (for both social offense and True/False statements).

We began to go over the "Prior knowledge" sheet.

HW explained at the end of class.  Students received two handouts:  Social offense Prediction sheet and Insults/Salutations sheet.  For the prediction sheet, use knowledge from class, topics brought up on the social offense sheet (both sides) and answer the question on the handout.  This does not have to be lengthy.  Then, for the insults/salutation sheet, read through the 23 statements and write whether you believe something positive is being said (Salutation) or something negative is being said (insult).

If you were absent today and did not already arrange to take the vocab quiz, please email Ms. Krivak to make the arrangements. If there are any questions, please email Ms. Krivak.

Students should have finished writing their essay.  If anyone did not finish, he/she should have made arrangements and come on a free period to finish.  If that student did not show up, the essay will be graded AS IS, with no chance for revision.

All students should have taken TWO handouts (for the next play that we're reading).  Any student who finished the essay should have worked on the handouts.  If students did not finish or get to do any of the work, DO NOT WORRY ABOUT IT.  Just bring it back to class tomorrow.

Students worked on their essays.  It was very disappointing to see how many students did not prepare any sort of outline for themselves.  If there's anything you can do at home to prepare for the essay, please do so!

    ENGLISH 9 - HACKERT/KRIVAK
  • 5/8/18

We went over the essay.  If students pick the central idea of "dreams are as necessary as food and shelter", then they need to decide which two characters best support that central idea (the class decided that Walter and Bennie would be best).  The best literary terms that students could use for support are conflict and characterization.  If students pick, "Family is the most important relationship in most people's lives", then Mama and Ruth would be the best options for analysis.  Literary terms here could be symbolism, conflict, or characterization.

Students received the rubric for the essay (which is not attached.  If you were absent, you'll get it tomorrow).  I then showed students examples from an actual Regents exam and asked them to figure out how the central idea was supported and through which literary device.  We looked at a 4, 3, and a 1.  If you were not here, there's not a way for me to upload this, so I'm sorry you missed it.

Attached is a "breakdown" of each paragraph. Some students received this, and others took notes.

Tonight's HW is to create an outline for the essay.  This does not mean to include complete sentences/paragraphs.  If anyone comes in with a "rough draft", he/she will not be allowed to use it. Students will only have about 40 minutes to complete the essay in class, so having a good outline will help!  It will allow for less time to be "searching" for things.  Bring pens/paper to class (always).

Students got this week's vocab to enter into quizlet or onto flashcards.  We did not hand out a packet, but it is attached or available if you need to look at it.

We collected TDQs, which many of you did not hand in.  We are baffled by this.  We hope that you will complete it tonight and hand in tomorrow for partial credit.

We handed out the essay topic.  Please read through it and ask questions if you have any.

It’s a little after 430 PM Sunday and I haven’t heard from any of the inviduals who we’re absent Friday. When you are absent and miss anything, you are supposed to make it up the next school day.  Several of you need to make arrangements to take the vocab quiz.  If you do not, you will receive a zero for the quiz.  Of course, there are some exceptions.  However, to not have heard from anyone tells me a lot and it’s disappointing.
