Daily "summary"

  • 6/11

    Last day

Students should have written a letter to next year's students and completed the A-Z list of things learned in English this year.  If you handed it in and did not put your name on it, you have a zero for the grade.  Several of you did not put your name...  If you were not here, you have an AB0.

    Have a wonderful summer.

    ENGLISH 10 - KRIVAK - PERIODS 7 AND 8
  • 6/6-6/8

Final exam days!  You should have completed part I and II by Thursday (early), then started the essay, and, finally, finished the essay on Friday.

We are doing some things for next year, so please come to class with a pen on the last day of school.

    ENGLISH 10 - KRIVAK - PERIODS 7 AND 8
  • 6/4/18

Students took the Acts II and III quiz.  If anyone did not come to retake the Act I quiz, then I allowed them to do it during class.  Students should have handed in the questions they had to complete for Brutus and Antony's speeches.  If they did not hand it in today, then I'll take it Wednesday for 20 points off.

I gave students a summary and went over it for Acts IV and V.

I also gave them the outline for the text analysis essay they'll write for the final exam.

    ENGLISH 10 - KRIVAK - PERIODS 7 AND 8
  • 6/1/18

    1.  Handed back some papers.  One of those was the Julius Caesar Act I quiz.  I informed students that I would allow them to RE-TAKE the Act I quiz, but it must be done on Monday.  If there's any reason you can't do it then, I need to be told ASAP.  The quiz will be the same quiz and you'll just write your new answers on it.

THERE ARE NOTES FOR ACTS II AND III IN THE CAESAR FOLDER.  PLEASE FEEL FREE TO CHECK THEM OUT.

    2.  I handed out several papers today (all attached here).  Antony's Soliloquy with my notes, Brutus/Antony speeches and questions, and the last sheet (which I neglected to hand out) for Act IV and V.  There will be a quiz on Acts II and III Monday in class, so students must do whatever they can to do well on that quiz.  The link for No Fear Shakespeare is in the Julius Caesar folder.  The notes for Antony's Soliloquy should be read over for Monday.  Students must also finish reading Act III (yes, all of it).

    3.  I gave students four questions to answer from last night's reading, but students were allowed to use their books.  This was timed.  If students read, it should have been pretty easy.  I collected this.

    4.  We then listened to part of Act III scene ii.  I gave students Brutus and Antony's speeches along with questions they must have answered for Monday.  These questions are based on some of the information in the speeches I gave students, but some are not, so the No Fear Shakespeare website must be used. Students should have noted the difference in how Brutus spoke to the people versus how Antony spoke to them.  In addition, what are these people like?

    5.  Also attached here is an outline that you will want to look at for the Final exam next week (that's in addition to the vocab list I already provided for you).  And to anyone who did not give me the annotation rubric, PLEASE print it and hand it in Monday.  I will give you a zero if I do not have the rubric.

  • 5/31/18

We listened to Act II scenes iii and iv.  I then assigned roles for Act III scene i.  We did not get to finish, so students MUST read the rest of that scene for HW.

I will be giving a quiz on Monday for acts II and III.  So, anyone who might not have read last night's HW or taken notes from the reading from yesterday's or today's class, you have time to "catch up".

Final exam is June 6, 7, 8!!!  I do not see you June 5th!  Vocab to review is in the vocab folder.  The rest of the test is reading comp and an essay.

  • 5/30/18

We continued to read and take notes for Act II scene i.  If you were absent, please read what you missed using the No Fear Shakespeare website.  Please read the left side first and then the right to make sure you have a good understanding of what is happening.

Tonight's HW is to read Act II scene ii using No Fear Shakespeare.  Students should be ready to discuss tomorrow and/or possibly have a quiz.  http://nfs.sparknotes.com/juliuscaesar/

Please remember that the final is a week from today.  Students received the review list of vocab last week (and it can be found in the Vocab folder if anyone's misplaced it.

    ENGLISH 10 - KRIVAK - PERIODS 7 AND 8
  • 5/29/18

Notes for Act I are included in the Julius Caesar folder.  Please feel free to look at those, especially if you were one of the many who didn't do this weekend's homework.

Today we quickly discussed characteristics from the pre-reading handout (from the weekend).  I asked if anyone had questions and addressed those.  Students then took the reading quiz.  If you were absent, please EMAIL ME BEFORE TOMORROW TO TELL ME WHEN  YOU'LL BE COMING TO MAKE IT UP (IT SHOULD BE AT SOME POINT TOMORROW).

We began to listen to Act II scene i.  Students in 8th period must read to where Cassius says "And let us swear..." (it's literally 2 1/2 pages).  Take notes and be prepared to answer some questions.  Remember that the link for the reading is in the JC folder.

  • 5/25/18

Students wrote the outline for the text analysis for "The Palace Thief".  While the periods were shortened, this should have been enough time to complete the outline.  The only part of this essay that's in complete sentences is the introduction.  The rest is in note/outline form.  However, I know some students are more comfortable writing in complete sentences and I would not penalize for that.

I reminded students that  they are proving how character interactions demonstrate the central idea they've chosen (Either identity, importance of history, OR expectations).  For instance, we definitely saw many interactions with Sedgewick and Hundert.  So, if you decided to talk about the central idea of expectations, in what TWO OR THREE  WAYS DO SEDGEWICK AND HUNDERT'S INTERACTIONS DEMONSTRATE THE CENTRAL IDEA.  Remember that you had interactions when they were young and old.  At the end of class, students should have written the introduction and at least ONE body paragraph should have been outlined. I have attached the rubric I'll be using to grade.

Students DO have HW over the weekend and they must do it in order.  FIRST, they must read the pre-reading characterization sheet.  There are two sections for the characters of Julius Caesar and Brutus.  Based on the quotes provided in the middle column, what characteristics are demonstrated (you fill that out in the last column where there's space to write).  For instance, if you think someone is jerk based on the quote, you would write jerk and then say briefly why.  SECOND, students must also read act I of Julius Caesar using the No Fear Shakespeare website.  http://nfs.sparknotes.com/juliuscaesar/

Students should read the original text (left side of website) and then the modern text (right side of website).    They should take notes, and be prepared to take a quiz on Tuesday.

  • 5/24/18

Students should have read the rest of the story for today.  I asked if they had any questions/comments, and we discussed things for a few minutes.  Then, students took a quiz based on the reading.  If you were not here, you are expected to email me to tell me when you'll be making this up (and it should be tomorrow if you are available).

I handed out the vocab to review for the final exam.  I do not need students to hand this back in; it's just a list for them to study (in whatever way they want).

I then gave students the final assessment for the story.  Students will complete an outline in class tomorrow.  Students did not have much time to start today.  They should have handed in the assignment, no matter what.

Annotations are due TUESDAY.  Please refer to the rubric and add anything you believe you'll need in order to get a 100!  The rubric is located in the folder for "The Palace Thief"

We finished going over the TDQs from yesterday.  We then continued to read and annotate pages 198-205.  Students must read and annotate the rest of the story (it ends on 205) for tomorrow.  Annotations will not be collected this week.

Reminder:  Vocab 16 quiz is TOMORROW.

Today we read page 195-198 (stopping after "'And I see that...'").  I asked students to meet up with partners to QUICKLY discuss annotations, and then they worked to find the answers to four TDQs (see attached).  If you were not here, please highlight these answers in your text.

Welcome back, everyone.  I hope that everyone impacted by the storm is doing as well as can be.  If there's anything I can do to help, please let me know.

The vocab 16 quiz will now take place on Wednesday, 5/23.  Please study.  This is now the last vocab of the year.

Today students had to take the Prevention Needs Assessment Survey, which is anonymous.  The purpose is to learn how students in the school feel about community, family, peers, and school and it also asked what students think about different health behaviors and drug use.  If you were not here, it's okay.  There's no need to make it up.

I also reminded students ONE LAST TIME about the AP test.  If anyone meets the requirements, and hasn't spoken to me yet, I need to know if you'll be taking this test and I need a permission slip signed by Wednesday.

We briefly spoke about what people believed "Man's character is his fate" meant.  This interpretation would be used to complete the quick write that students wrote in class today.

If you were absent, you will need to complete this on a free period tomorrow (or after school tomorrow).  Please let me know when you'll be coming in.

Students should have picked up the vocab for the last 10 pages of "The Palace Thief".  It's attached here if you forgot or were not here.

Please remember to study for the voc 16 quiz!  Vocab is located in the vocabulary folder.

  • 5/14/18

Students finished their jigsaw tool (in the original groups).  Then, students met with new groups (where there was at least one person from each jigsaw to present).  Students were then asked to write what "Man's character is his fate" (Heraclitus) means.  This will be discussed as a class tomorrow.

Voc 16 is available here and in the vocab folder.  Students should create flashcards and study for the quiz on 5/18.

  • 5/11/18

Students took the vocab 15 quiz today.  If you were absent today, you must email me to let me know when you'll be taking the quiz (it should be on Monday that you take it since you were absent one day).

They then got into the groups from yesterday.  I explained that they'd be completing a jigsaw activity.  Each group was assigned a "Jigsaw tool" and they used the rest of class time to complete that.  Students should have worked together to answer these questions and include page references.  Each period will get about 5 more minutes to complete this on Monday.  Students who were absent have work to do this weekend:  Ethan - Jigsaw B, Jared - Jigsaw A   Please complete the questions and share your responses with your group on Monday.  What will happen Monday is new groups will be formed where there will be a person from each jigsaw tool and each student will have to teach their jigsaw tool.

The handouts are attached.  If you have any questions, please email me.

Students finished presenting the TDQ responses for pages 187-191.  We then read/annotated/discussed pages 191-195 (stopping at "...congratulate the victor.").  I asked students to form FOUR groups.  If you were not here today, I told the groups to remember that you could be here tomorrow and to include you.

Vocab 15 quiz is tomorrow.  Study!

Quick write revisions are due tomorrow.

  • 5/8/18

I collected projects.  If anyone wanted to present, I offered that opportunity for 10 extra credit points.

I put students into groups and assigned certain questions from 187-191 TDQs.  Students then have to put their responses on poster paper and eventually present.  I will be grading the responses from each group for a class grade.  So, every group will be responsible for the entire class grade.

If you were absent today, please take a look at the TDQ.  Be ready to be included in a group tomorrow.

Reminder:  Quick write revision due 5/10, and vocab 15 quiz on 5/11

  • 5/7/18

Students put the lesson 15 vocab words/defs into quizlet or onto flashcards.  I did not give students the packet today, so if anything was missed, there is a copy of the packet attached.  It can also be found in the vocab folder.

The vocab 15 quiz will be on Friday, May 11th.

I collected the optional TDQ "HW".  I also handed back some papers and told students that if they wanted to revise the quick write, to do so by Thursday.

    Projects are due tomorrow!!!

We read pages 187-191 and annotated.  With the few minutes left at the end of class, students met with partners to discuss annotations.

It’s 430 PM Sunday and I haven’t heard from any of the inviduals who we’re absent Friday. When you are absent and miss anything, you are supposed to make it up the next school day.  Several of you need to make arrangements to take the vocab quiz.  If you do not, you will receive a zero for the quiz.  Of course, there are some exceptions.  However, to not have heard from anyone tells me a lot and it’s disappointing.
