Biography

Nicole J. Griffin is a high school science teacher in the Carmel Central School District, located in the Lower Hudson Valley of New York State. She is an alumni of CCSD and a student in Carmel Science Research. She began working in the CCSD in September of 2012.  While working in the CCSD, Nicole has taught 8th grade intermediate level science, Biology A/B, Biology Honors, Environmental Science and Zoology.  In September 2015, she became the coordinator of the Carmel Science Research program, affiliated with the State University of New York at Albany.  As part of the science research program students are afforded the opportunity to participate in the community of science research as part of their high school experience.  She guides students through the process of choosing a topic of interest from physical, natural and social sciences using professional literature, preparing a plan for intended research, conducting original research under the supervision of a scientist or research mentor and formally presenting their research at local, state and national competitions for scholarships.  Griffin graduated from Roger Williams University in 2012 with a Bachelor of Science, double majoring in Marine Biology and Secondary Education.  She was selected for the NASA Endeavor STEM Education Fellowship where she earned a STEM Education Certificate from NASA, Columbia Teacher College and Adams State University.  Most recently she graduated from Adams State University in 2015 with a Master of Arts in Education, majoring in Curriculum Instruction with STEM Emphasis. In 2016, she was selected for the Regeneron STEM Teaching Fellowship and had the opportunity to engage in a two-week laboratory research experience at Regeneron Pharmaceuticals. It allowed her to return to the classroom with a greater understanding of the skills young people need to develop to pursue college and careers in STEM fields. Currently, Griffin is a doctoral candidate at Western Connecticut State University working towards a Doctor of Education in Instructional Leadership. She began the doctoral program in 2017 and is in the process of conducting doctoral research focusing on examining the relationship between science teachers’ epistemology and self-efficacy on science instructional practices and conceptualization of student research experiences rooted in the Next Generation Science Standards.
